Are You Considering Adoption?
If you are facing an unplanned pregnancy, you may have doubts and concerns about raising a child at this point in your life – that is ok and nothing to be ashamed of. Adoption may be a practical option for you.
With adoption you will not have to parent before you are ready. You can continue with your goals for your education or career. You have the freedom to evaluate your relationships and make wise choices for your future.
The Adoption Process
Making an adoption plan is a decision based on love. It allows you as the birthparent to make wise choices for your baby’s future. One of those choices may include choosing an independent adoption with a family member or friend you trust. This is completed through a private attorney. Another option might be using an adoption agency where they or you may select a family for your baby from profiles and interviews with prospective families.
Types of Adoption
The most common adoption type is open adoption. Open adoption allows you to contact your child regularly and choose which family is right for your child. You and your adoptive family can decide together how much contact you will have. You decide how much contact you want as your adoptive family agrees to. It’s also completely ok to choose a closed adoption if you would like to remain anonymous to your child and the adoptive family. It’s entirely up to you.
Finding a Family
Choosing an adoptive family is often the most challenging part. There are so many adoptive families ready to adopt and welcome a child into their homes. As the birth mom, you get to choose the adoptive family and decide the environment and lifestyle you want for your child.
When you work with an adoptive agency, applicants go through a rigorous review process-they complete background checks, including criminal and abuse records. The family also fills out a lengthy questionnaire about their home life, hobbies, religion, and more. You will get to review their family portfolio. In the end, you will have plenty of information about each adoptive family to make a confident decision.
